Every minute somewhere in the world a woman dies in pregnancy or childbirth. 99% of these deaths are in developing countries. Almost all of them can be prevented.

We already know how to save mothers' lives. In the rich world during the past century, as women got the vote and got educated, our voices grew stronger in demanding that governments invest in public health and midwifery services. As a result, fewer and fewer women died in pregnancy and childbirth.

Yet today, complications in pregnancy and childbirth remain the leading killer of women in Africa and South Asia. At least half a million women a year die in the prime of life, leaving orphans and old folks behind. Some 30 times as many women suffer debilitating injuries and illness.

Why does this still go on? Many people simply don't know about it. And in many places, women have no power and are not a priority. White Ribbon Alliance is raising awareness of this shameful injustice - and demanding deep rooted political change to end the needless deaths of mothers around the world.
