Title: Viral meningitis epidemic spreads in Bosnian town Article Text: Another nine cases, including eight children, of the potentially deadly viral meningitis have been reported in Bosnia's northern town of Banja Luka since Friday when authorities proclaimed an epidemic.
"Since Friday, we have another eight children, up to eight years old, and one 32-year-old man infected with viral meningitis," a hospital official said Monday. A total of 33 patients, of whom only one is an adult, have been recorded, with other patients being children aged between four and eight. They were infected with viral meningitis in central Banja Luka and surrounding villages. Of them 24 patients were still in hospital on Monday, while others were sent home after receiving hospital treatment. The health authorities last Friday said there was an epidemic of viral meningitis in Banja Luka. The first case was reported two weeks ago. Meningitis, which often affects small children, is a serious disease in which the tissues enclosing the brain and spinal cord become infected and swollen, and it can be fatal if not treated properly. It is spread by direct contact with droplets from the noses and mouths of infected people. ?
