All the straps have to be long and they have to be acnhored into the body of the mei tai. This means doing top stitching over the whole of the body and the straps to acnhor them in (something like as if you would try to make strong handels on canvas bag - with those cross/box stitches). Some mei tais are made so that the straps are anchored onto the middle layer (you have three layers - the middle strong one that is not seen, and two outer ones - both of them can be decorative fabrics, making the mei tai reversible). If the straps are anchored to middle one, then the acnoring stictheswill not be obvious.
Also, use STRONG thread. Most manufacturer use Guttermann or similar, strong polyester as cotton tends to break.
The material has to be strong - canvas, twill and similar. The decorative panels do not have to be strong, as long as you have a strong layer to which the straps are anchored.
