I have started my Obs and Gynae training in Croatia in mid 80’s and vaginal exams were an essential part of antenatal care we provided - as far as I know this is still the case. When I started to practice in the UK (1989) I felt that the world is going to fall apart because of our ‘failure’ to perform routine vaginal exams – I thought at the time that this was is at best neglect if not ‘criminal’. My wife who is also a doctor and was pregnant at time thought the same. Over time my views have completely changed and I would politely describe the practice of routine vaginal exams as outdated. To support that I offer the abstract below.
